Last month, the California Federation of Teachers (CFT), which is a branch of the AFL-CIO, adopted a resolution at its annual conference supporting convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal, according to an article in the Daily Caller.
Among the resolutions largely pertaining to education and collective bargaining rights was Resolution 19 – to “Reaffirm support for death row journalist Mumia Abu-Jamal.”
“Therefore, be it resolved, that the California Federation of Teachers reaffirm its support and demand that the courts consider the evidence of innocence of Mumia Abu-Jamal,” the Committee Report reads.
The CFT says it plans to advocate for a resolution on a national level at the 2012 American Federation of Teachers convention, “reaffirming the AFT’s support for justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal should he not have been cleared of charges and released by that time.”
Mumia Abu-Jamal, was convicted of shooting, multiple times, Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner in 1981. He reportedly confessed to the crime and was given the death penalty.
I frankly don’t understand how teachers stand by and allow their union leadership imply that the entire group supports issues like this while the state of our education system is declining. I also don’t understand how other labor organizations can support radical teachers’ union positions when they include support of convicted cop-killers. If you are a police officer, ask your union rep about their support of other unions who support Mumia Abu-Jamal.
Union brotherhood should only go so far!
