A U.S. Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint by Mexican military personnel who had crossed the border into Arizona last Sunday. When additional Border Patrol agents responded to assist, the Mexicans retreated back into Mexican territory without incident.
The incident took place in an isolated area approximately 100 miles southwest of Tuscon. While it is unclear what the Mexican Army was doing on the U.S. side of the border, law enforcement authorities have said for a long time that Mexican military personnel are being hired to protect drug and migrant smugglers.
It is only a matter of time before one of these incidents will turn into a major firefight with people on both sides being killed. Since 1996, there have been over 200 incursions into the United States by Mexican military.
I can assure you that if U.S. military personnel crossed into Mexican territory and held Mexican law enforcement at gunpoint, there would be an outcry that we had committed an act of war…and they would be right!! What is happening is an act of war by any definition. Our government is ignoring it and so is the Mexican authorities.
What should happen is that the American ambassador to Mexico should be sent with a tersely worded letter from the President of the United States stating that if he cannot keep Mexican military on their side of the border, we will see if the 82nd Airborne might be able to take care of the situation!
