The Border Situation is Not Good

The situation on our southern border continues to get worse.  While neither the U.S. government or the Mexican government shows any desire to control the border, the threat of violence and crime continues to increase on the U.S. side.

Thomason Hospital in El Paso, Texas has received 22 patients so far this year who are believed to be victims of drug wars in Mexico.  The most recent situation forced the hospital to be placed in “lockdown” by El Paso and federal law enforcement authorities last month, when a Chihuahua Police Commander was being treated for gunshot wounds he received when his SUV was ambushed in an assassination attempt on the streets of Juarez.

Law enforcement armed with assault weapons stood guard outside the hospital and all doors were locked with the only access allowed being through the emergency room where all visitors were required to pass through a metal detector.

The reason for the security precautions was apparently to protect against the possibility that the drug cartels that attempted to kill him in Juarez, might come across the border to finish the job.  There are also reports that Mexican hospital personnel have been killed for providing medical assistance to members of the police, which would lead one to believe that the protection of the staff at Thomason Hospital was a reason.

Granted, this is only one hospital in one city, but I have to wonder why you haven’t heard about it unless you watch either Lou Dobbs or Glenn Beck.  Every other American media outlet outside of El Paso seems to have missed what is happening.

Apparently, Congress has missed the story as well.  Where is at least some support for border patrol and law enforcement on the border?  Where’s the fence?!

Drug Cartels Are Threat to Mexican Government

Guillermo Valdés, head of Cisen, the Mexican government’s intelligence organization, told the FT and a small group of foreign media recently: “Drug traffickers have become the principal threat because they are trying to take over the power of the state.”

Mr Valdés said the gangs, which have grown wealthy from the multi-billion-dollar drugs trade, had co-opted many members of local police forces, judiciaries and government entities in their efforts to create local structures to protect their business.

Those efforts, he said, could now also be targeting federal institutions such as Congress itself. “Congress is not exempt . . . we do not rule out the possibility that drug money is involved in the campaigns [of some legislators],” said Mr Valdés.

Can anyone explain why there is a threat of drug cartels taking control of a country that borders ours and it isn’t being reported in the main stream media?

For Those Who Thought There Was A Border Fence Being Built

The 2006 Secure Fence Act specifically called for “two layers of reinforced fencing” and listed five specific sections of border where it should be installed. In December of 2007, Congress passed a giant spending bill that undermines current plans for the U.S.-Mexico border fence, allowing the Homeland Security Department to build a single-tier barrier rather than the two-tier version that has worked in California.

The border fence also has run into problems from various environmental groups, ranchers, pro-immigration groups and lawmakers from both parties who have contributed to legal battles that have delayed or stopped the building of the fence.

A majority of Americans were in favor of securing our border when the original bill was passed and, I suspect, a majority of Americans believe that the fence has either been built or that it is in progress.

They wouldn’t have any idea that there is no border fence, no progress being made on building one and very little interest in Congress and among the White House to get the job done.

While those who believe in having an open border argue that the fence is just another method of harassment of the good, honest migrant worker who wants to come into our country to earn money to feed his or her family.  They don’t consider the fact that the same route taken by those good people are also being used by potential terrorists and by drug runners!

Perhaps it is time to get your elected representative in Washington on the phone and remind him or her that you want the fence built…and that it is an election year, which means build the fence or we’ll get someone in office who will!

Democrat National Committee Gas Tax Break

The City of Denver, which is hosting the Democratic National Convention next month was apparently providing DNC committee members with the ability to fill their gas tanks on taxpayer dime at city’s gas pumps – by letting them skip paying state and federal gas taxes.

The Rocky Mountain News reported:

The practice, which began four months ago, may have ended hours after its disclosure. An aide to Mayor John Hickenlooper released a statement Tuesday evening saying that Denver 2008 Host Committee members would pay market prices for fuel and would also be liable for all applicable taxes. However, Public Works spokeswoman Christine Downs told City Council members just hours before that host committee members were fueling up at the city pumps. The city does not pay taxes on the fuel for its fleet, and Downs said the host committee would not either.

The disclosure brought immediate scrutiny. Colorado Attorney General John Suthers said the practice “would seem” to be illegal and referred the matter to the state Department of Revenue.

Nonprofits, such as the host committee, are subject to state and federal gasoline taxes, according to the Department of Revenue.

The mayor’s office is trying to play this off as though the RNC was getting a similar break in Minneapolis (where the Republican National Convention will be held), but the RNC is paying the tax on fuel just as any other taxpayer.

The excuse given by the DNC for using the city’s tax free pumps is. “We know the gas is not tainted.  We use it as a safety and security measure.”

There is no record of tainted gas in or around Denver and no reports of any threat to  Denver residents when filling up at the local privately owned gas stations.

The Debate Is Not Over, Mr Vice President

Former Vice President Al Gore made a speech speech in Washington last Thursday about renewable energy.  Americans For Prosperity had a special slant on their coverage.  They wrote an article and produced a film on their  web site to cover the speech:

Go to http://www.americansforprosperity.org/index.php?id=6070 to check out their article and video concerning the speech!

In his speech, he claimed that if we don’t get completely off the use of carbon fuels in the next 10 years, it will be catastrophic for the nation and the planet.  I don’t understand why he has set 10 years as the deadline.  Even some of the scientists who have supported Gore’s Global Warming thesis have said that there has been no warming at all since 2001 and, in fact, the planet has actually cooled slightly since then.  They say that the cooling will continue for 10 years.  So, Mr. Gore, what is the 10 years to doomsday speech about.

I tend to believe that Vice President Gore is in a rush for one of  two reasons.  Either he and his friends are afraid that too many scientists will prove his inconvenient theories wrong and make him look foolish to the world or he and his friends, have invested a lot of money in companies that specialize in “green technology” and companies that stand to capitalize on the world accepting and converting all forms of energy to “green energy” based on his inconvenient theories.  The latter theory would cause him to lose the millions of dollars his stands to gain through his investments.

I think, before we the people spend all of the money that is going to be required to convert to Gore’s demands, we should hear out the scientists who are currently speaking out against his Global Warming theories.  We should also conduct public hearings, either in Congress or with a Presidential Commission to determine if Vice President Al Gore stands to gain so much money from the planned changes that there might be a conflict of interest in what he says.

But these things won’t happen.  We won’t want a little thing like the truth to stand in the way of Al Gore making a boatload full of money.  That might be why Al is quick to say, “The debate is over.”

Is Our Economy Being Wrecked on Purpose?

If you follow the news, you’ve heard of housing crisis after mortgage crisis after banking crisis.  You’ve seen the price of oil skyrocketing to new highs causing the cost of everything we purchase to go up.  The airline and trucking industries cannot afford to continue operating and many have either already gone out of business or are on the verge of going out of business.  You’ve seen the value of the dollar dropping to new lows.  The stock market continues to decline.

We cannot continue to bail out everyone who is having problems making ends meet!  We seem to think that we can just print more money and that will make everything better.  What we are doing is borrowing money from other countries to cover the new dollars we print.  That’s not totally unlike getting a cash advance from MasterCard to pay your Visa bill.

I frankly don’t want to believe that it is all happening by direction, but I’m beginning to have to give that very idea serious consideration.  Every time I hear an economist talk or read something they have written, they are all saying our economy, and therefore our country, is in serious trouble.  They are saying that we cannot continue to operate this way.  Yet, every time I hear someone from Washington talk, they are saying that there is no problem or if they admit there is a problem, they point blame at someone else and say we just need to provide more government assistance.

I may be the first to say this, but I will not be surprised if and when we are told by our “government officials” that the dollar has weakened to the point where it would be in the best interest of the country if we should join our economies with those of our neighbors and convert from the dollar to the Amero as a currency.  I can’t say when this is going to happen, I can’t say how it will happen.  Mark my words, however, someone is going to suggest it.

Stop The Leaks

The government, at all levels, seem to be able to offer rewards for information leading to the arrest and conviction of law breakers.

I submit that the United States government should offer a reward of up to $10 million dollars for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of anyone who leaks classified information.

I cannot believe the amount of times I have heard reported on the news or seen in print classified information that had to have come from someone in government who had access to the information.  Anyone who has access has signed documents stating they would protect classified information and that they would be subject to a fine and/or prison for releasing it to unauthorized sources.

Before all of the Bush-haters have a fit about the President saying things that might have come from classified sources, I would like to remind you (or educate you) that the President of the United States has the authority to de-classify information.  Every President in my memory has done so from time to time (including Clinton, Reagan and Carter).  So don’t even go there.  The White House staff, members of Congress and their staffs, State Department, Department of Defense, Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security personnel and so on, do NOT have the authority to do so on their own.

I know that the press will say that the American people have a right to know the information and never hesitate to publish it.  Certain parts of the press seem to get a thrill out of publishing classified information.   The fact is, most Americans realize there is a need to have some information kept secret.  Most Americans realize that to reveal classified information can cause grave damage to the United States, can jeopardize operations and can cause the needless loss of lives.

I would like to say that we should also prosecute the media people who publish the classified information, but I do recognize the First Amendment of the Constitution talks about free speech and freedom of the press.  It does NOT, however protect people who choose to turn the classified information over to whoever they want.  Those people need to be put in jail the same as any other person committing espionage.
