It has been announced that former President Jimmy Carter will meet with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal in Syria while on a trip to the the Middle East.
Hamas is listed on the current list of Designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations by the U.S. State Department. They receive funds, weapons and training from Iran.
While President Carter is being described as a private citizen and therefore able to do as he chooses, I would have to take exception to the description. I am a private citizen and I am pretty sure that I would not be allowed to get close to the front door of the Hamas organization, let alone have a meeting inside with one of the leaders. Jimmy Carter is going as a former President and will be covered by Arab press as such. If he doesn’t jump right in front of a microphone immediately after the meeting, I will be totally surprised. Once again, Jimmy Carter is acting like he cares more about what is good for his image abroad than what is in America’s interest.
As an American citizen, I object to any former President or Vice President going overseas to meet with our country’s enemies. I further object to people who held those offices going overseas and criticizing our sitting president, our goverment or our policies. It is one thing for them to be critical of the administration that is in power, regardless of party, while in this country. To do it on foreign land is treasonous and demeaning to the office they once held.
Let us not forget that there are American tax dollars being spent any time these folks travel abroad. They should at least have to pay for their own trip and provide thier own security while they are acting un-American.
Jimmy Carter should reconsider his planned meeting with Hamas!
